Community gardening in Montréal

ontreal is known as a gardening Mecca thanks to our municipally run community gardening program, which ranks among the most extensive in North America. Montreal's gardening movement has a very interesting social history, (see A Social History of Urban Agriculture in Montreal), which recently began a new chapter. Over the past few years, grass roots organizations concerned with community development and food security have begun gardening with a more explicit social focus.

La Cuisine des Parents / École Jeanne-Lebert runs a collective garden which is integrated into the school curriculum as well as their summer day camp. The food the Young Gardener's club produces goes to the La Cuisine des Parents, a community kitchen run out of the school cafeteria.

In 1997, Equiterre started two collective gardens on Montreal's south shore, providing low-income residents with gardening experience and giving them access to organic vegetables. Local community groups have gradually taken charge of the gardens. Eco-Action has brought back to life a beautiful old greenhouse in the heart of the Plateau area, belonging to Les Pères du tres Saint Sacrement. The greenhouse produces seedlings for Eco-action's demonstration garden and local organic gardeners.
