Petition was successful
Tuesday, November 15 2011 23:09

The petition for a public consultation on the state of Urban Agriculture in Montreal was successful!

In total, 25082 Montrealers have signed the petition within the last three months and thus the required number of 15000 signatures to have a public consultation was by far exceeded. The GTAU (group de travail en agriculture urbaine) became the first group to successfully claim the right of initiative. Thanks go out to all the people who put lots of energy and effort into helping to acquire the signatures. The city of Montreal is now obligated to hold a public consultation on the topic in 2012.

Workshop: Seed Saving
Tuesday, August 09 2011 10:56

Lyne Bellemare from Seeds of Diversity gave an energetic workshop on seed saving. I had the chance to assist (and being a beginner gardener, learned a lot).

Did you know that when cross-pollination occur,  two types of plants of the same species, like Cherry tomatoes and Italian tomatoes, will end up creating a tomato with characteristics from both! The taste that can come out of these kinds of mixes doesn’t necessarily ensure goodness; however, it can be interesting to discover a new kind of fruit or vegetable.

To ensure a level of purity in the plant seeds, you need to respect certain distances.

If we look at parsley, your field or gardening space would either have to have nothing but parsley for 2km or just a few parsley and nothing else around for that space. Of course, mixing can happen between plants of the same family only. So I don’t think you need to worry about it that much ;)

On another note, buying seeds from certain stores (more specifically, the big chains) does not mean you can save seed with them. There’s this terminator gene called F1 which, overly simplified, means the seeds that your plants will make won’t grow. Personally, I find that strange and amazing at the same time.

That’s a few facts from the workshop. A big thank you to Lyne and Seeds of Diversity for having experts on hand.

UA Public Consultation
Thursday, July 28 2011 08:14
Hi everybody! Welcome on the new blog of Action Communiterre! My name is Anne-Sophie and i work
for AC within the framework of the public consultation on the state of Urban Agriculture (UA).

The Working Group on Urban Agriculture where Action Communiterre is engaged would like to use the
Right of Initiative to create a public consultation on the state of Urban Agriculture in Montreal.

Public consultations generate new solutions that can influence the City’s attitude towards
sustainable development and provide support for the expansion of urban agriculture in Montreal.

UA occupies and increasing presence within Montreal’s collective consciousness and yet
the city itself boasts incredible agricultural potential.

We hope that this consultation will mobilize stakeholders around a vision of UA which
will, for example:

-Maintain and increase spaces for urban agriculture
-Developing access and dissemination of information
-Promote the role of agriculture in an integrated urban development
-Institutionalize partnerships
-Support innovative projects etc…

For the city to hold a public consultation, the right of initiative states that we must collect, in 90 days,
signatures from 15, 000 Montreal residents aged 15 and up, from August 11th to October 31th 2011.

It’s the first time that a such as project is planned! We need a lot of volunteers to collect signatures for
the petition!

For more information on collecting signatures, please contact me: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
We're counting on you!

‘Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.’ – Margaret Mead

Have you ever felt like wanting to leave your mark on this Earth, to make thing better and point to it and say: ‘We did that, I knew we could.’?

I ask because I’ve seen so many fantastic people at Action Communiterre (AC) change their worlds in small and powerful ways. It seems to be a common thread, helping others, helping yourself, living in harmony with nature, being self-sufficient and sustainable. The list could go on, and it will with your help…

Today is the grand opening of the Action Communiterre blog! =) I started the idea of this blog as a way for you urban agriculture enthusiasts, gardeners, and everyone involved or interested in AC to communicate and share. Oh but, I should start by introducing myself.  I’m Leena. I was an intern in social work with AC last year and this summer, I’m mainly helping organize the Harvest Party and the workshops you’ve started hearing about.

We'd also like this to be an opportunity to share updates from our collective gardens.  Feel free to comment on anything you read, or let us know if there is anything you'd like to see up here.  We hope to have some guest blog posts from our gardeners and friends in the community too!  If you have something to share, let us know. Contact us directly at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. , or call us at (514) 484-0223.

Before you go, one question:

What would you like this blog to do for you?
